Sustainable and Better Beauty

I don't think it would be possible for me to continue sharing my sustainable fashion journey with y'all without eventually diving into sustainable beauty. I've actually dabbled in sustainable beauty for a lot longer than sustainable fashion (just ask my sister- she used to make fun of all the different products I've tried, lol). I've sampled lots of organic and clean products over the years. I've shopped the cosmetics aisle at Whole Foods and Chamberlains over and over looking for the perfect products. Buuuut, I've never been inspired by any of those products... at least not enough to continue to purchase them. Well, about a year ago I found a company that has changed that.

Yep, I've found sustainable beauty line that I have become loyal to, so that's saying something! I want to share with y'all why I'm loyal to this company; yes the makeup is beautiful and looks like a million bucks, but that's not the reason they've grabbed my loyalty.

My current go to's.. I use these everyday

The company is Beautycounter.

Our mission is to get safer products into the hands of everyone. -We deliver on this mission in three key ways: Creating and distributing safer, high-performing products; educating the public about how to avoid harmful ingredients; and urging the government to pass laws to better regulate the beauty industry.

To a sustainable fashion blogger and person who is increasingly concerned about our environment (not to mention personal health of me and my loved ones) that is all music to my ears! They are committed to sustainable sourcing and over 80% of their products are plant derived. They also aim for sustainable packaging and use paper and glass as much as possible. But there's so much more.

Beautycounter's got some sweet certifications to back up their mission and sustainability, because they can say it, but can they prove it??? Yep!

B Corp

Certified B Corporations are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. B Corps are accelerating a global culture shift to redefine success in business and build a more inclusive and sustainable economy. - B Corps

Beautycounter is a Certified B Corporation, which is kind of a big deal. Other B Corps you've probably heard of are Athleta and Patagonia.

Chemical Footprint Project

We envision a world where chemicals are healthy for people and the environment; where disease rates for cancer, infertility, asthma, and learning disabilities are falling rapidly; and where governments and markets reward healthy products. To achieve this vision the Chemical Footprint Project tracks, disseminates, and benchmarks corporate progress to safer chemicals in products, manufacturing, and supply chains. -Chemical Footprint Project

Beautycounter has achieved the highest score from the Chemical Footprint Project's survey for two years in a row. The Chemical Footprint Project is a bit like carbon footprinting, but measures a company's chemical impact on the environment and human health.

Environmental Working Group

The Environmental Working Group’s mission is to empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment. With breakthrough research and education, we drive consumer choice and civic action. We are a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment.  -Environmental Working Group

Beautycounter is part of EWG's Verifed program. To be a part of this program a company's products can't contain ingredients that are toxic to the environment or have human health concerns. Furthermore, the company must follow the European Union's required guidelines on allergens in fragrances.

I could keep going about all the other amazing things this company is doing to be sustainable and create products that are better for you.. and I will in future posts, but for now let me leave you with a few thoughts of mine.

Why would't I use this stuff? The makeup is beautiful and looks wonderful on. It also feels great. My lipstick feels like lip balm, my mascara never crumbles, my eye-shadow colors are vibrant and stay on, my bronzer is the PERFECT shade, and on and on. But, when I combine all of that with their approach to sustainability I honestly feel GOOD about wearing my makeup. I feel empowered, and I know that I am supporting a company that actually CARES about my family and our planet. This is not a company that believes in profit over people, quite honestly it's a company that puts people and planet BEFORE profit. They way it should be.

xoxo,
