Tips For Living With Hashimoto’s Disease

Living with Hashimoto’s disease can be challenging, but there are several lifestyle factors and tips that can help improve the ability to manage the condition.  I’ve had Hashimoto’s since I was 15!  Over the years I have learned about the disease and how my body works best when it comes to managing the disease.

Here are some tips for living with Hashimoto’s disease.  This is not medical advice, always consult with you doctor before trying anything new.

  1. Balanced Diet: Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and moderate amounts of meat, while avoiding fried or processed foods, may improve symptoms. Incorporating nutrient-dense foods such as fruits, non-starchy vegetables, and starchy vegetables can help reduce the severity of symptoms and improve overall health.  I personally don’t eat gluten or soy.  Eliminating those have helped me manage my disease.
  2. Hydration: Getting enough water is crucial for optimal health, as it helps with inflammation and improves metabolic function.  I carry around a half gallon water jug and sip off of it throughout the day.
  3. Stress Reduction: Participating in stress reduction practices such as yoga, spending time outside, and engaging in restorative activities can reduce symptoms such as anxiety and depression, and improve overall quality of life.  I try to squeeze in yoga once a week.
  4. Sleep: Getting enough sleep is important for managing Hashimoto’s disease. Prioritizing rest and ensuring a good sleep routine can be beneficial.  I am a 9 hour girl.  My Hashimoto’s has always made me super tired, even when my levels are good, 8 to 9 hours of sleep per day is really my sweet spot.
  5. Physical Activity: Engaging in stretching, restorative activities like yoga, and staying active can help manage symptoms.  I like to run 3 to 4 times per week.   I also enjoy lifting weights 1 to 2 times per week.
  6. Self-compassion and Gratitude: Giving oneself grace, practicing self-compassion, and experiencing joyful movement can contribute to living better with Hashimoto’s disease.  For me this looks like giving my body rest weeks when I need them.  Every couple of months or so I ease back on my exercise routine and give my body a week or so to heal.  Being kind to and forgiving of my body has been beneficial for me.
  7. Social Support: Connecting with others, whether it’s through friends, family, or online support groups, can be an integral part of the healing process and provide valuable support.  I love to chat with friends who also have Hashimoto’s and see what’s working for them.
  8. Supplements: Certain supplements like fish oil, zinc, selenium, magnesium, vitamins B12, and D may be helpful for individuals with Hashimoto’s disease.  I take a collagen supplement with my daily protein shake.

It’s important to note that while these tips can be beneficial for many individuals, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional to develop a personalized management plan for Hashimoto’s disease. Everyone’s disease is different and what’s good for me may not be good for you.  These are just suggestions!
