How to Style Like Frida Kahlo This Summer

Frida Kahlo is one of Mexico’s most famous artists.  Beside being known for her beautiful art, mainly her self portraits; she is also known for her signature, self expressive style.  Her distinctive look incorporated flower crowns, bright colorful- multi layer dresses, and chunky vibrant jewelry.  With her look she signaled to the world her love for her native Mexico, choosing to dress in a more traditional way; eschewing the more modern day fashions of her time.  Her look is like Mexican culture personified, it shows the blending of the indigenous cultures of the Maya and Aztec with the Colonial culture of Spain.

Me in my interpretation of Frida’s style

I first learned about Frida in a college Spanish class.  It was right around the time the Salma Hayek movie Frida came out.  The movie captured my imagination and when I went to study abroad in Spain later that year I fell in love with the Spanish culture;  and became enamored with studying the blend of Spanish cultures and indigenous cultures that make up the vibrant culture of Latin America.  To this day some of my favorite designers are Spanish or Latin American.  The blend of new and old, history, and the way Latin fashion tells the story of it’s culture is fascinating to me.  Frida is a perfect example of Latin style and I see her influence in so many Latin (and American) designs today.

If you want to imitate Frida’s style this summer you’ll need the following:

  1. Bright, layered, flower print dresses- primarily in cotton
  2. Gold jewelry- cuffs or hoop earrings
  3. A straw bag
  4. Flat and simple sandals in gold or white
  5. A turquoise ring
  6. Beaded necklaces
