Embracing Elegance: Style Tips to Avoid the Frump After 40

Turning 40 is a milestone that often comes with a newfound sense of confidence and self-assurance. However, when it comes to fashion, some of us may find ourselves stuck in a rut, unsure of how to navigate the evolving landscape without sacrificing comfort for style. Fear not! In this blog post, we’ll explore some key style tips to help you avoid the frumpy look and embrace a chic, age-appropriate wardrobe after 40.

Flawless not frumpy. Fashion do's to update your look.

First off- let’s define frump.  The term “frumpy” is a somewhat subjective way to describe someone’s appearance or clothing as dowdy, old-fashioned, or unfashionable. When someone is described as frumpy, it typically means that their style or attire is perceived as unattractive or outdated.  Style that is not flattering the person or putting them in their best light.  Frumpy clothing and style choices often lack the elegance, sophistication, or trendiness that some people might prefer.

It’s important to note that what one person finds frumpy, another may find perfectly comfortable or appealing. Fashion and style are highly subjective, and what’s considered fashionable or unfashionable can vary greatly from person to person and over time.  So, wear what makes you happy and remember style is subjective.  Everything I say here is my opinion on style and that’s all!

  1. Say Goodbye to Cargo Pants: Cargo pants, while practical for certain activities, can contribute to a frumpy appearance. Instead, opt for tailored pants that flatter your figure. Tailored trousers or well-fitted jeans can provide comfort without sacrificing style, giving you a polished and put-together look.  Cargo pants are experiencing a revival right now.  But, it’s important to be careful if you want to try out this trend.  Avoid ones that baggy, have voluminous pockets, and drawstrings.  Instead try a pair with slim cut or A line cut, flat and wide pockets, and maybe some utilitarian stitching.  Like this pair from Banana Republic: Refined Utility Pant
  2. Steer Clear of Cropped Pants: Cropped pants might have been a go-to in your younger years, but as you enter your 40s, consider opting for full-length trousers or jeans. These elongate the legs and create a more sophisticated silhouette. If you still love the cropped style, aim for ankle-length rather than mid-calf to maintain a modern look.  Bring in some fun materials for your updated pants.  Try a faux leather look for this season and linen when it warms back up!  Here’s some ideas:
  3. Bid Farewell to Outdated Prints: Outdated prints can instantly age your appearance. Instead, choose timeless patterns like stripes, polka dots, or subtle florals. Avoid overly busy or large prints, as they can overwhelm your look. Opt for classic prints that stand the test of time, ensuring you stay effortlessly stylish.  Here are some classic stripped prints tops you can try.
  4. Balance is Important: Avoid too Much Fabric or Ruffles: While a touch of ruffle or flowing fabric can add a feminine touch, too much can be overwhelming and contribute to a frumpy appearance. Aim for balance in your outfit – if you choose a flowy top, pair it with fitted bottoms, and vice versa. This ensures a harmonious look that is both stylish and age-appropriate.
  5. Ditch the Tent Tops and Ponchos: Wear clothes that are fitted and fit you!  Tent tops and ponchos can drown your figure and obscure your shape. Instead, embrace tops that highlight your waist, creating a more defined and flattering silhouette. Choose tops that cinch at the waist or consider adding a stylish belt to accentuate your curves.  I’m guilty of this I used to wear flowy tops to hide my middle, I was very self conscience about my stomach area.  But the tops made me look bigger, and weren’t really true to my style aesthetic.  Everyone, no matter their body shape looks better in clothes that fit them!  I’ve competed in pageants with women from size 0 to plus size and they all look beautiful in their clothes because their clothes fit them and are tailored to their body!  Here are some great ideas for flattering tops.

Entering your 40s doesn’t mean sacrificing style for comfort. By making thoughtful choices in your wardrobe, you can maintain a chic and sophisticated look that reflects your confidence and individuality. Remember, it’s not about adhering to strict fashion rules but about embracing a style that makes you feel your best. With these tips in mind, you’re sure to avoid the frump and step into your 40s with style and grace.
